Day of days!
We will be talking about this January 20th, 2025 for years to come. The Golden age of America got started on the right foot with the inauguration and the multitude of balls and galas and parties peppering all over DC.
Whether the ceremony was moved indoors due to freezing weather, or else because of perceived security threats, the first indoor inauguration in 40 years was a very moving affair.
But a moment from that evening was so emotional and patriotic, that it deserves an encore here on TGP.
We're talking about the Naval Academy Glee Club performing "The Battle Hymn of the Republic".
As the voices of the midshipmen and women echoed from the neoclassical style walls of the Capitol rotunda, the dignitaries – including former presidents, Supreme Court justices, and world leaders – were transported out of space and time into a mythological and patriotic dimension in which the majestic room beneath the Capitol dome really became the 'symbolic and physical heart' of the Capitol, and of America as a whole.
Millions of people all over the world were also impacted by the moving rendition of the anthem.
"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is a patriotic American song – with lyrics by Julia Ward Howe and music by William Steffe – that was written during the American Civil War in 1861, and quickly became a powerful anthem for the Union forces.
The rendition by the U.S. Naval Academy Glee Club was phenomenal, with rich vocal harmonies, and very clever changes in key and in tempo, keeping the standard verse-chorus structure alive and exciting during all the song.
In fact, sometimes conductor Chia-Hsuan Lin slowed the tempo so much, and the melody and lyrics became so poignant that my face was awash in tears like this singer below:
Watch: turn the sound on, and have a patriotic flashback to celebrate the beginning of a fantastic journey.
"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" is also by definition an abolitionist song, so it feels right to also relay here the equally historical 1963 version by Odetta, celebrated for its emotional depth and strong delivery:
